05/05/2004: I definitely don't "get" the South.....

I don't mind Krystals (I stopped for a "late night" snack on my way home from the George Carlin concert), but they are but a mere poseur next to the one, the only, the original, the best: White Castle. So when I see the ads on local TV, I do have to wonder what exactly the attraction is. But probably I think that way because I grew up in White Castle country; if I was raised with Krystals I'd probably wonder what the deal was with White Castle.

That being said, I have to say that the B.A. Burger looks good, and it's definitely on my "must try soon" list. Then again, the B.A. is a "real" hamburger, unlike White Castles or Krystals.

UPDATE: I take the pejorative connotations of that last post back. According to their website, three Krystal locations in Memphis, including the one nearest my home, will have free 802.11b wireless 'net access by June 30, 2004. I can see that I'll be spending more time there the second half of the year....

I never knew sliders until I was into my twenties, but grew up with "greastyls." They make great 3 AM food for staving off hangovers. A handful of Krystal burgers and a large cup of ice water usually helped soak up and dilute the booze still floating in my stomach!

But who would have *ever* thought Krystal's would be an early adopter? That's really freaky to a Southern, Krystal's raised boy like me.

Sliders were, in my dissipated college youth, used to the same prophylactic anti-hangover effect that you used "grestyls".

Considering the similarity between the two burgers (if the concept were patentable you'd have expected an infringement suit), I'm wondering what makes for the difference in taste? Clearly, further research is warranted. As is a trip back to STL to reacquaint myself with the taste of classic White Castles.
