07/19/2004: A question for the Cub fans who occasionally read here....
Um, I never had any particular dislike for Carlos Zambrano, and I don't intend to start now, but is he often as much of a dick as he was acting tonight? I mentioned Jim Edmonds's "revenge homer" earlier. Since then Zambrano struck Edmonds out (a rather nice K, I thought), but after the strikeout went out of his way to wave his finger at Edmonds in a contemptuous (as I saw it) way... and then, just a few minutes ago Zambrano hit Edmonds again (for which he was ejected).
I can understand having a bad night, but I've never seen him act quite like this before. Wondering if this is an isolated incident, or if there's some dark secret lurking there that I've just not been seeing.
UPDATE, 7/20/04: Brian Gunn at Redbird Nation puts it nicely:
You hear lots of words to describe Carlos Zambrano -- "fiery," "emotional," "competitive," "demonstrative." I'll add a few more: "deranged son of a bitch."
UPDATE, 7/21/04: sterling calloway, in an email to Brian Walton at The Cardinals Birdhouse, makes a good point, which again raises the issue of what pissed Zambrano off, anyway?
and what is dusty pissed about? edmonds always does his lil look after a jack, I mean didnít dusty manage barry bonds? did'nt he stare at his homers like they were the mona lisa?
