Dark Bilious Vapors

But how could I deny that I possess these hands and this body, and withal escape being classed with persons in a state of insanity, whose brains are so disordered and clouded by dark bilious vapors....

While I was really hoping for a sweep of The Hated Cubs this weekend, we did take two of three from them, the Cubs are 7 games behind us going into the all star break, and as Brian Gunn of Redbird Nation notes, things are not at all bad:
In a way (admittedly, in a very small way) I'm glad the Cardinals lost going into the break -- perhaps it'll encourage our players to stay hungry while resting sore body parts. What's more, if the Cards had gone up 9 games on the Cubs, we'd be subjected to any number of inane articles speculating whether the NL Central race is over. There's still a lot of baseball to be played, and while a 7-game lead is cause for both relief and rejoicing, it doesn't negate what figures to be an exciting second half.

Suppose the Cardinals play only .500 ball the rest of the way. That means the Cubs would have to go 45-30 to overtake us. They haven't played that well so far (in fact the only two teams that have are the Cardinals and Yankees), but it wouldn't at all surprise me to see the Cubbies win six out of every ten games down the stretch. The Cardinals can make all of that moot by continuing to play great baseball -- remember, the Cubs only have two more games to make up ground head-to-head. After that it's essentially Cardinals vs. themselves.

Goddamn, Houston blows. I am one unhappy DisAstros fan right about now.

I am enjoying it very much, thanks. Watched Saturday's game at a bar in New Orleans and disturbed many an afternoon drunk with my hollering.

Cleavelin, I linked you up to my page which in itself is a miracle as you are the first Cardinals fan to be given that prestigious honor. Heh.

But since we are politically compatible, and share an alliance to BS Tommy, I thought that I'd link you up.

Plus I like reading your site.

Anyway, if it's not too much of a long shot, could ya link me up too?

(You could put me and Tommy in a group by ourselves as Cubs fans)

Gooseneck,

The first, eh? I'm deeply, deeply touched and honored.

Gotcha linked up in two places, along with two other regular reads. Thanks for the compliment; hope I can keep up the good work.

Thanks Cleavlin! And (Ahem!) Hope the redbirds have a successful 2nd half!

I know: just not more successful than the Cubs!

;-)

On a serious note, I went to grad school in Chicago, where one of my fondest memories is cutting class to go to Wrigley in April and May (I'm the only person I know to wear a Cardinals cap in the bleachers at Wrigley Field and live to tell about it), and my dad's a Cub fan (though I can't figure out why, since he's a native St. Louisan with *no* ties to Chicago that I'm aware of). I don't want the Cubs to beat out the Cards, but if they do I'll happily root for them in the postseason over any other team.
