Dark Bilious Vapors

But how could I deny that I possess these hands and this body, and withal escape being classed with persons in a state of insanity, whose brains are so disordered and clouded by dark bilious vapors....

07/07/2004: Gem o'the Day:

From Brian Leiter:

The most amusing part [of the RNC trashing of VP candidate John Edwards], of course, is the suggestion that he is "unaccomplished." Consider: Edwards came from a working-class family, had no special breaks in life, yet went to college and law school, and became a skilled and successful attorney. Now contrast this with the current alleged President: he had every break in life, yet couldn't do anything successfully or even competently (he even bankrupted Texas, before departing). Don't these RNC goons have any idea how ridiculous this looks?
Keep in mind something that Leiter, a professor at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, has noted elsewhere.... Bush not only had every break in life, but he came from a rich, well connected family which was prominent in Texas and national politics, and yet he still couldn't get himself admitted to the state university law school (and he did apply, unsuccessfully). Almost boggles the mind. And reminds me of another potential "Gem o'the Day":
I am sure there is a place for young George Bush somewhere. However, in light of his grades on the LSAT exams, that place is not the School of Law at the University of Texas.

Bush had to use influence to get into every private school he attended. People who believe in the Ivy League should realize that the reason the economically challenged can't get in is that the low end of the class are filled with the "legacy" students. They use the scholarship students to balance this lack of scholarship.

The legacy provide the money, the scholarship comes from the poor kids.

There's a reason we named a street after Dean Keeton at UT. Nice quote.

Never had the pleasure of deaing with Dean Keeton (yeah, like I got to hobnob with the great lumenaries of legal scholarship), but he's legendary in the profession. I can begin to see why.
