06/10/2004: Cleaning out some of the files on my home computer....
I came across this one. This is basically an old (and somewhat salacious) joke that had been making the rounds of the 'net back....oh around the turn of the century... (and I can't exactly describe how, uh, interesting it is to use the phrase "turn of the century" to actually refer to a date within my lifetime). It should go without saying (but I'll go ahead and say it anyway) that these addresses are most assuredly not real email addresses, and only a cursory investigation will reveal some glaring mistakes (e.g., the Internet domain for Duke University is not "dku.edu"--it's "duke.edu"--"dku.edu" being assigned, near as I can tell, to a university in Korea). That being said, it's still pretty damn funny:
Many colleges and businesses tend to strip the last name down to 6 characters and add the first and last initial to either the beginning or end to make up an e-mail address.I notice that Greymatter renders the email addresses as "mailto" hyperlinks in the rendered blog page. I'm going to leave this as such, wondering how many folks are actually going to click on the links and send email to these various individuals. Anyone actually doing so is free to drop me a line and let me know what the results are; I suspect that most are going to just be bounces.
For example, Mary L. Ferguson = mlfergus or fergusml. They are just now beginning to realize the problems that may happen when you have a large and diverse pool of people to choose from.
Add to that a large database of company/college Acronyms and you have some very funny addresses. Probably not funny to the individual involved, however:
