Dark Bilious Vapors

But how could I deny that I possess these hands and this body, and withal escape being classed with persons in a state of insanity, whose brains are so disordered and clouded by dark bilious vapors....

06/04/2004: Baseball trivia time

There's a feat in baseball known as "hitting for the cycle": that's where a batter hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game (not necessarily in that order among his plate appearances). It's a pretty rare feat; there are plenty of excellent hitters who've never hit for the cycle in their careers. One of those hitters is someone whose name you might recognize: Babe Ruth.

As you might guess, some demented baseball stathead has compiled a webpage which records a listing of every major league player who's hit for the cycle at least once in his career.

Because I can, a listing of every St. Louis Cardinal who's hit for the cycle (and the date they accomplished the feat):

Cardinals
Tip O'Neill 4/30/1887
Tip O'Neill 5/7/1887
Fred Dunlap 5/24/1886
Tommy Dowd 8/16/1895
Cliff Heathcote 6/13/1918
Jim Bottomley 7/15/1927
Chick Hafey 8/21/1930
Pepper Martin 5/5/1933
Joe Medwick 6/29/1935
Johnny Mize 7/13/1940
Stan Musial 7/24/1949
Bill White 8/14/1960
Ken Boyer 9/14/1961
Ken Boyer 6/16/1964
Joe Torre 6/27/1973
Lou Brock 5/27/1975
Willie McGee 6/23/1984
Ray Lankford 9/15/1991
John Mabry 5/18/1996

Some other trivia: only two players have hit for the cycle three times in their careers (one, Babe "the other Babe" Herman, is the only player to have hit for the cycle twice in one season), and only 19 have hit for the cycle twice in their careers. Six players have included a grand slam in their cycle, two players have hit for the cycle twice in their careers while doing it once in each major league, and only one player (Gee Walker--a household word, eh?) has done it on Opening Day (April 20, 1937, while playing for the Detroit Tigers). And in the "come on, it's overdue" department, there are three major league teams which have yet to have a player hit for the cycle: the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Florida Marlins (must have something to do with that Florida climate), and the San Diego Padres.

There's only one thing missing that I'd like to see; a listing of every player (if any) who's hit for the cycle by hitting a single, double, triple and home run in that order. I know... kvetch, kvetch, kvetch. Even with that slight omission, this is an awesome compilation.

What Casey Stengel said is true: you really can look it up.
